The walking trails consist of well-maintained gravel paths, dirt tracks, and wooden boardwalks winding through the thermal reserves. The walk through Waimangu Volcanic Valley is primarily a gentle, steady downhill stroll. It is perfectly suited for families and standard fitness levels. We simply recommend wearing comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes.
Our guide tallies 6000 steps each day on the morning tours and upto 10,000 on the full day
-
Yes, we highly recommend booking as far in advance as possible. Because we strictly limit our vehicles to small groups (maximum 15 guests) and coordinate timed entry tickets for premium spots like Te Puia and the Lake Rotomahana cruise, our slots fill up very quicklyâespecially during peak travel seasons.
-
Unfortunately, no. Our vehicles are not currently equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps. Additionally, due to the natural volcanic terrain, the geothermal parks feature gravel paths that are steep, uneven, and stepped in several areas, making them unsuitable for wheelchairs.
-
Yes, absolutely. In fact, mature travelers and retired couples from Australia and the USA are our most frequent guests. We intentionally design our experiences to be safe, highly comfortable, and thoroughly enjoyable for all fitness levels.
Here is what you can expect on the day:
-
A Relaxed, Unhurried Pace: Unlike large commercial bus tours that rush guests on a strict timeline, our shared groups are capped at a maximum of 15 people. This allows us to move at a gentle, leisurely pace with plenty of rest stops to sit down and soak in the views.
-
Well-Maintained Pathways: The walking routes at Wai-O-Tapu, Waimangu, and Te Puia consist of clear, flat boardwalks and well-maintained gravel paths. Where terrain features longer distances or steady inclines, we utilize available internal park shuttle buses to keep walking completely manageable and stress-free.
-
Easy-Step Vehicle Access: Our modern, pristine Volkswagen and Toyota fleet features air-conditioned comfort, large panoramic viewing windows, and easy-step entries so getting on and off the coach is effortless.
-
Dedicated Guide Support: Our expert local driver-guides remain close to the group at all times. They are always on hand to assist with pacing, share rich local storytelling, and will happily take high-quality photos of you throughout the day so you can just focus on the scenery.
-
-
We can absolutely arrange that for you as a private tour experience. Because we are based in Rotorua, we don’t operate shared group departures directly out of Auckland. However, we have a dedicated team of professional drivers available in Auckland who can provide seamless, private transport for your group if required.
-
Absolutely! The cooler winter air actually makes the geothermal activity look way more dramaticâalmost Jurassic or straight out of Middle-earth. Itâs a completely different vibe than you get during the hot summer months.
đ„Ÿ On-Tour Experience
-
Yes, on our cultural tours! If you book our Elite Cultural Afternoon Tour or our Full-Day Cultural Experience, your all-inclusive admission to Te Puia includes entry to their state-of-the-art Kiwi Conservation Centre, where you can view native kiwi birds up close in a specialised nocturnal environment.
-
Yes! The Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily at exactly 10:15 AM. Our morning and full-day itineraries are precisely timed so you arrive with plenty of time to secure a great front-row seat for the presentation and eruption.
-
Rotorua is a spectacular destination all year round, with each season offering its own unique charm.
-
The Summer Months (December â February): This is our peak season when the region comes alive with vibrant energy and warm weather. While it is a fantastic time to explore, it is also incredibly busy with international travelers.
-
The Winter Months (June â August): Winter is a truly magical, hidden gem of a season. The cooler air creates a dramatic, “Jurassic” atmosphere. On crisp winter mornings, heavy mist and steam nestle deep within the native forests and geothermal valleys, making the landscapes look incredibly mystical.
The Elite Advantage: If you choose to visit during winter, you can easily skip the heavy summer crowds. Because passenger volumes are lower, you also significantly increase your chances of getting a highly personal, intimate experienceâor even a one-on-one tour with our expert guides! No matter what time of year you choose to travel, Elite Adventures has a perfect day lined up for you.
-
-
While Rotorua is home to many incredible five-star attractions, we highly recommend Wai-O-Tapu, Waimangu Volcanic Valley, and Te Puia. These are the “Big Three” geothermal and cultural icons that we visit every single day on our shared group tours.
Additionally, world-famous highlights like the Hobbiton Movie Set and Waitomo Glowworm Caves are always at the top of New Zealandâs must-see list. Because we specialize in premium transport and seamless logistics, we can easily accommodate custom trips to these regional hotspots as well.
Whether you want to stick to our signature routes or build a completely bespoke private charter, our team can do anythingâjust let us know what you want to experience!
-
Elite Adventures is 100% locally owned and operated. For over 25 years, we have been incredibly proud to support our community by hiring expert local staff and celebrating the very best of authentic Rotorua hospitality.
"đŹ What Our Guests Say"
đŒ Bookings, Upgrades & Extras
-
Yes, we specialise in custom cruise ship shore excursions. Your private Elite Adventures guide and premium vehicle will meet you directly at the Port of Tauranga wharf as soon as you disembark. Because we are a private charter, you won’t waste time waiting for a massive bus of 50 strangers to loadâwe hit the road immediately so you can maximise your day onshore.
-
Yes, absolutely. Our private charters are completely customisable (“You decide, we guide”). Combining the magic of the Hobbiton Movie Set with the subterranean wonders of the Waitomo Caves is one of our most popular full-day custom itineraries. Because these iconic spots require strictly timed entry tickets, please contact our team directly so we can coordinate the perfect schedule for your group.
-
While Rotorua is located in a highly active volcanic zone, these geothermal systems are constantly monitored by GNS Science (New Zealand’s geological experts). The steam vents and boiling springs act as natural pressure-release valves, so the parks are completely safe to explore. Your guide will keep you firmly on the designated boardwalks!
-
While the native bush looks like something straight out of a fantasy movie, the local wildlife is strictly limited to native birds and unique thermal plants. If you want to see actual Hobbits, youâll need to book our private charter tour over to the actual Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata!
-
Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Elite Adventures operates a modern, premium fleet of fully air-conditioned vehicles, including spacious Toyota Coaster coaches and Volkswagen Crafters, as well as a modern Mercedes Viano for smaller and private groups. They are perfectly maintained and designed for smooth travel through Rotoruaâs scenic roads.
-
We specialise in small-group experiences to ensure you get personal interaction with your guide. Our standard transport and guiding groups are limited to a maximum of 15 guests, completely avoiding the crowded, impersonal feel of large commercial tour buses. (Note: During the indoor Te Puia segment on cultural tours, groups are hosted by venue staff and may be slightly larger.
-
We provide complimentary door-to-door service across the entire central Rotorua CBD area. If you are staying slightly outside this zone (such as deep in the outer suburbs or nearby lake settlements), please contact our team directly before booking. We can easily arrange a convenient, central meeting point or a custom pickup option for you.
-
Yes, absolutely! If you are booking directly through our website, you will see our “Relax & Unwind: Premium Polynesian Spa Finish” available as an optional add-on right at the bottom of the checkout page.
This premium upgrade includes your entry to the famous geothermal hot pools and a seamless return shuttle transfer back to your central Rotorua accommodation at the end of the day.
Please note: This optional extra is exclusively available for direct online bookings and is hidden from travel agent or affiliate booking portals.
đ Passenger Comfort & General Info
-
For a half-day eco-thermal tour we will have a break at Wai O Tapu for 10-15mins at approx. 10am where you can grab a snack or drink before the Lady Knox Geyser eruption at 1015am.
We also have a break at Waimangu at approx. 12pm where you can grab cabinet food, snacks and drinks also.
Your guide can give you advice on the eateries back in Rotorua on your return and if possible, may drop you close to them e.g. Eat Streat.
If you are on a full day Eco and Cultural tour, depending on group size, eatery opening hours and time, your guide will organise with you a place to stop for lunch prior to your booked 2pm Te Puia experience.
We recommend bringing snacks and drinks that you may eat on board our vehicles, however we just ask that you help keep our vehicles clean by avoiding messy foods and utilising rubbish bins at the attractions.
-
Yes. Our premium fleet has dedicated storage space. If you are checking out of your hotel and heading straight to the airport, a cruise ship, or your next destination after the tour, you are welcome to store your luggage securely inside our vehicle for the day. Please let us know before your tour if you are bringing luggage with you.Â
-
While our guides also speak varying levels of Te Reo MÄori and other languages, our main tour commentary is delivered in English. Because our itineraries include detailed commentary on local history, cultural protocols, and complex geothermal science, a good understanding of English is highly recommended to get the most out of your experience.
If members of your group do not speak English, we highly recommend booking a private tour, which allows you to bring your own translator or travel at a pace that suits you!
-
Yes. Our first and second stops in the morning both have toilet, bathroom facilities and also Te Puia on the full day. The guides are very understanding and have a great knowledge of the area and closest facilities if anyone has medical issues in this respect. Please advise the guide in the morning if you have any issues and we will look after you.
-
We recommend bringing a refillable water bottle, a warm – waterproof jacket (weather can change quickly), a camera or phone for photos, and any personal medication you might need. If you are joining an afternoon or full-day cultural tour, you do not need swimwear, but sunscreen and a sun hat are highly recommended for the open geothermal fields.
-
Unfortunately, no. The geothermal waters within the parks are far too hot and highly acidic for human bathing.
However, if you are looking to soak during your stay, let your expert local guide know! They can share recommendations for Rotoruaâs premier thermal hot pools and spa resorts, and may even be able to secure a local discount for you.
-
Ah, the famous Rotorua aroma! That is hydrogen sulphide gas, a natural byproduct of the local geothermal activity. While it smells distinctly like sulphur (or boiled eggs) when you first arrive, your nose adapts surprisingly quickly. As for your clothes? A standard run through the washing machine will wash the scent right out.
-
We operate rain or shine! Rotoruaâs geothermal valleys look incredibly atmospheric and moody in the wet, and the cooler air actually causes even more dramatic steam to rise from the hot springs. Unless MetService issues a severe weather warning that impacts road safety, or the parks enforce an unexpected closure, your tour will run exactly as scheduled. Just bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella!
-
Not at all. We completely understand that managing walking distances is important, and our itineraries are designed to give you maximum flexibility and comfort across both locations:
-
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland: This park features the gentlest terrain of the day. The primary walking tracks are generally flatter, very well-maintained, and incredibly easy to navigate at a leisurely, self-paced stroll.
-
Waimangu Volcanic Valley: This valley naturally features a steep decline as you head down into the geothermal system. To keep the physical exertion perfectly manageable, our group walks together down Bus Stop 1. From there, you don’t have to worry about climbing back upâwe hop on the internal valley shuttle bus and comfortably ride it right back to the top visitor centre.
Our guiding team will be right there with you to manage the pacing, ensuring you enjoy all the spectacular views completely stress-free!
